Feeling refreshed

Friday, August 20th, 2010

There’s a thunderstorm outside my window right now.  I’m sitting on a recliner near the window in my bedroom and I’ve been watching the rain come down in torrents and watching the lightening flash.  It’s been an impressive storm.  Cars driving past my house are going very slowly because the storm drain is blocked up and the street is flooded.  The thunder has been pretty constant for the last fifteen minutes or so.  It’s a perfect example of a southern summer storm.  Torrential rain, violent lightening, crashing thunder.  It’s beautiful!

About twenty minutes ago, just after the rain started, a cement truck drove up in front of my neighbor’s house.  I noticed yesterday that he’d framed out a spot outside his back door to put in a larger patio.  I had to laugh when I saw the truck because there was no way that they’re going to lay cement with this storm.  Plus, nobody was even home!  I believe his wife just got home, but it’s still pouring down rain, so I really don’t know what that truck plans to do.  The storm might pass within the next hour or so, but the ground is still going to be soaked.

In other news, I’m so thankful that I work for a place that lets me take time off and pays me to do it!  I took a vacation day yesterday and the half-day I would have worked today and I stayed home.  Well, that’s not entirely true.  I’ve gone out places both days, and it’s been wonderful.

Yesterday, we went to the beach at Hunting Island.  We enjoy the beach there.  There’s long stretches of sand and because it’s a pay-to-enter state park, the crowds aren’t as busy as other beaches, nor are they the same type of people.  It’s really an enjoyable place to be.  Plus, before money got tight, we bought a year-long pass and we can get in for free.  Unfortunately, we’re in the middle of summer, which means the water is perfect for jellyfish.  We saw a lot of them the last time we went out, and I freaked out because I don’t like jellyfish.  And then we learned that what we saw were cannonball jellyfish and they’re not terribly dangerous.

So when we got back there yesterday, we were prepared to see the little purple jellyfish that probably wouldn’t hurt us and I tried to be okay with swimming with those jellies, even through it’s really counter to what I’m used to thinking about those creatures..  And even though the water was really calm, it felt good to be in the water.  Until I saw a jellyfish that wasn’t a cannonball and that had the classic long tendrils of PAIN.  Okay, so it was probably only about 3 inches across, but the tendrils trailed down for about 8 inches and I really, really don’t want to get stung.  Besides, when we got back onto the beach, we found one that was stuck in the sand that that sucker was a good 12 inches across.  That thing was huge!

So much for enjoying the water.  We did stay at the beach, walking along the water line and looking at the things left by the tide.  We hit just a little after low tide, so the sand went for ages before running into the water.  We looked at shells and the poor cannonball fish washed up on shore and enjoyed the wind blowing.  The sun was crazy hot, so we didn’t stay terribly long.  It was the type of day where even though we were wearing 85 SPF sunscreen, because we’re so pale, we’d probably still get burned.  We stopped at a nearby surf shop so I could admire some of the clothes, treated ourselves to Zaxby’s for lunch, and went home.

Today, we went to the library to return books and get Justin a library card.  And we stopped at a comic book shop nearby.  It was a lot less geeky than we expected, even though that sounds not possible.  There were comics and figurines and t-shirts.  But it felt more like a boutique than a place for geeks.  We’ve been trying to find out where that community hides – it’s really hard to find the geeks around town because we tend to stay in our homes.  But when you’re new to the area and trying to find friends with similar interests?  It’s really complicated.  And frustrating.  And we’ve been trying to figure out how to work around that.

Anyway.  It’s been a wonderful couple days.  I’m feeling much more relaxed than I have been.  I’ve gotten a good amount of sleep and done things that I enjoy.  And I’ve not done anything that requires me to proof-read a document for hours on end.  I’ll have to get back to that on Monday, but until then, I’ve still got two more days of relaxing.  I have really needed this break from work.  It feels so good!

Have I mentioned that my life is not boring?

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

I handed in those last two projects on Monday, after I was at class from 7:00 – 11:30.  I even ran my meeting at 1:00 and had a successful discussion there.

Today, I handed in another and I’ve got another one started.  The one I handed off has been kept by that coworker and I hope to not have to do anything with it because I have another one that same day that I need to look at updating.

But tomorrow I’m taking a vacation day.  Followed by another vacation day on Friday.  Followed by yet two more days of weekend.  And I’m really looking forward  to it.

Expecially because next week I’ll have to prepare for being out of the office for a week and a half, which will involve a little bit of frantic working.  And then when I get home from work, Tuesday I have Bible study, Wednesday I have a meeting about a committee at church, Thursday I have band practice, and Friday I’m taking a break from chuch activities and hanging out with a bunch of geeks online.  And then Sunday, I’ll be at church early for more band practice and stay late for the Servapolooza.

And then on Monday we’ll head out for the Symposium.

I’m not going to be bored anytime soon.

Happenings

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Okay, so the post before this one is password protected and it’s because it’s pictures of an expensive item for my sister-in-law to see that were too numerous to email to her, but not something I’d like to just put up for everybody to see.  So, that’s what’s going on there.

To make up for that, you get the thrilling tale of my Saturday!

We went to help at Room at the Inn in the morning.  Our church helps them out now and then, taking care of things that require more money or hands than they tend to have on on hand.  So we went over and re-did a couple rooms, doing painting and staining and other things.  Mostly, Justin and I moved things around and did random little things like hang pictures and put knobs on dresser drawers.  I was wiped from last week, but happy to help for as long as I could.  Which was from 10:00 when we started until 1:00, when I was tired, hungry, and ready to go home.

So we did!  And showered and looked up times for movie showings and relaxed for several hours.  I ran to a thrift store, found it closed, went to the consignment shop next door, and bought a pair of sheets for fairly cheap.  (And then discovered the next day that it would take more money to make the gift for Erica than it would have to buy it, and that I didn’t have the money for either option . . . .)  And then we drove to Savannah.

Justin needed a haircut, and we have a pretty solid routine when that happens.  We go to Raye Anne at the Regis in Savannah Mall (yes, this is a promotion for her because she’s AWESOME and we want her to be able to keep cutting hair there), we get dinner at Savannah Gyro (and yes, that is a kiosk in the cafe court — they have the BEST GYROs), pretend that we’re going to save room for ice cream from Cold Stone, and stop at Target.

So we got there with time to eat gyros before Justin’s haircut.  We stopped at the Verizon store and I fell in love with the Incredible.  I left Justin at Regis and went to Target and picked up a few things, including under-pinnings for my dress for the wedding.  He found me still in Target and we checked out, decided that we weren’t going to get ice cream.  And then went across the street with the tickets I got from an award months ago and saw the movie Inception.  And that was AMAZING.

And we drove home later than we’ve driven home from a movie in a long time, past the neighborhood where we used to live, which brought back fond memories, back to the home we love, where we collapsed into bed after a long, fantastic day.

Which was good because today I was at a training class at 7:00 AM and then spent all afternoon remembering why I was happy to be leaving Friday afternoon.  Bright side:  I handed in the last two projects I was working on last week.  And I’m 85% certain that the document my coworker took over is going to be done by that coworker instead of me.  Which means that if I can get the document that’s due on Friday done by Wednesday and the one that’s due on Monday started sometime this week, too, I’m going to take vacation days on Thursday and Friday and just make a long weekend out of it.  Because, dang it, I’m tired.  I want a few days when I’m not worried about getting work done.  I want to sleep in and go to the beach and relax.  And then I’ll go back to work, have a frantic week before I’m out for a week and a half, and then enjoy some time doing things that aren’t charging through these documents as quickly and frantically as I have been.
