Getting hired on directly

Posted on 18 September 2008 by Kylene

So, I should have done this ages ago, but I’m working on getting hired on directly by my employer instead of being a long-term temp.  I’m not going to go into the why’s about why I didn’t do this earlier, just to say that I had a lot of anxiety about it.

Anyway, we’ve been working on the process of getting me hired on directly.  What this involved was me sitting down with my manager and letting him know that I was interested.  Then we had to find a pre-existing job description that would cover my position, and that also took into consideration that I would greatly appreciate getting paid more than I am currently.

Once we found that job description, we had to get the director of the department to agree that it was a good plan, that the job description was suitable for the needs of the group, and all of the other details that go into getting Management to want to hire me on directly.  This doesn’t happen frequently in this department.  People who come in as a temporary worker usually stay as a temporary worker.

This time, however, the director decided that he would be interested in keeping this position on and filled with a direct employee, so he signed off on the paperwork.  Just getting this far in the process was very exciting.

My manager received email notification that the job had been approved by the director, which he forwarded on to me earlier this week.  The next part of the process is that the job is posted on the job listings site on the intranet.  This happens generally on Thursday.

So far this morning, my job has not been posted.  It’s rather disappointing.  I keep checking to see if maybe it’s up now.  But no.  Not up yet.

I’ll check again in half and hour.  Maybe it’ll be up by then.

It’s exciting, though.  If this goes as I expect, meaning if the job is the same description and pay grade as my manager told me about, I’ll be going from a pay grade that’s between $12.58 – $18.87 (at which I made slightly less than the midpoint level) to a pay grade that’s between $18.49 – $27.74.

That much of a pay increase could make for some great changes and travel opportunities in our future.

But for now, we’re still just waiting for the job posting to show up.  (Eek!  I think that’s it right there!)  Now I just have to figure out what to do and how to apply for this!

Okay.  Gotta go now and see if I can take care of this.

Love ya!

P.S.  Okay!  So I figured it out and I’ve submitted my application for the job.  Now I wait!
